Once again, the FLWF is planning a dual-pronged attack on weeds this year - using both herbicides and weed harvesting.
Herbicides:
We will be treating curly leaf pondweed and sago pondweed beds in up to 38 acres where the weed beds are most prolific. See yellow sections in below image. A survey of the pondweed beds will be made in early April and we will then treat them with an aquatic herbicide (Aquathol-K) by the end of April before they have a chance to produce turions (buds). This herbicide is effective for one year.
We are also planning to treat up to 20 acres of Eurasian water milfoil in the far south end of the lake. See blue section in below image. This treatment, using ProcellaCOR, will be done in May. As we have seen, ProcellaCOR effectively eradicates milfoil for at least 3 years in the treated area. We have not seen any regrowth of milfoil in the northern portion of the lake that was treated in 2024.

Weed Harvesting:
As early as we can get the weed harvester onto the lake in April, we will begin harvesting the pondweed in the areas we aren't treating. The hope going forward is to start harvesting before the weeds start budding which will cut back on growth.
Costs:
We did not received any grants for herbicide treatments this year so we are using funds left over from last year and anticipated membership contributions and donations to cover these expenses. It's going to cost $72,000 so please consider a membership or making a donation today.
We are vastly improving the water quality and enjoyability of Findley Lake, but we need your donation to sustain the progress. Please click here for membership information or to simply to make a donation.
